Alfonse "Al" Apicella
Alphonse "Al" Apicella 79, of Toms River formerly of Union died on Monday April 7, 2014 in Community Medical Center in Toms River. The funeral will be from the Galante Funeral Home 2800 Morris Ave. Union, on Friday at 9 am. The funeral mass will be in St. Michael Church in Union at 10:15 am. Entombment will follow in Ocean County Memorial Park in Toms River. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
Born in Newark he lived in Union for 50 years, before moving to Toms River 25 years ago. He was a real estate broker in Union for 30 years, semi-retiring 10 years ago. He was the former president of the Brotherhood of St. Anthony Social Club in Vauxhall, a member of the Columbia Italian American Club of Union, and the Regular Democratic Club of Union for many years.
He was also a veteran of the US Army serving in the tank division from 1957-1959. Al was very proud of the fact that he was very instrumental in organizing the installation of the Bocce Courts in Bierteumpfel Park in Union where he enjoyed playing Bocce with his friends, and where there is a plaque with his name on it commemorating his involvement.
Al was married to his late wife Lois (nee Surowiec) for 27 years until she passed away. He is the father of Kevin Striker and his wife Lori, Dennis and Cynthia Striker. He was also the brother of Vincent Apicella, and the uncle of Michael and Donna Apicella, and Susan Palmer, as well as the grandfather of Devin, and Mackenzie Striker and is also survived by many cousins here in the USA and in Italy.
