Carmel Salvatore

Carmel Salvatore, 83 of Newark passed away peacefully at Beth Israel Medical Center on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 surrounded by her loved ones.

Carmel was a lifelong resident of the Ironbound section of Newark. She worked for the U.S. Government Secret Service Department. She had the honor of meeting Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan also Lucy Baines Johnson. After many years of service, she retired in 1990.

Carmel was a parishioner of Our Lady Mt. Carmel Church in Newark and also a member of the Clifford Street Seniors Club.

She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Domenica (Galante), siblings Carmen, Gloria Cushman, Sam, Sister Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mary Manco and Anthony (Tony).

Carmel was the beloved aunt of Elaine Maliszewski (Ronald), Joseph (Patrice), Bernard Cushman, Lucille Leonardis (James) and Cynthia Manco.

She is also survived by her loving great nieces and nephews Karyn Maliszewski, Christina Salvatore, Dominic (Jacki), Lauren Churus  (Eric) and Christine Leonardis and a great-great nephew Nathan Salvatore.

As the matriarch of the Salvatore family she had a special relationship with each of her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed cooking and baking her family's favorites. Carmel also enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, yearly trips to Saranac Lake NY and classic movies on TCM.

Carmel will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Funeral from the Galante Funeral Home 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Saturday at 9AM.

Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Newark at 10:30 AM followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Visitation Friday from 3 to 8 PM
