Carmela Costanzo, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on June 13, with her family by her side. She was 75 years old and a resident of Monroe Township.
Born in Reggio Calabria, Italy on October 24, 1946, Carmela immigrated to America with her family when she was 9 years old. She grew up in the Ironbound section of Newark and was a graduate of East Side High School. After graduation, she worked at Wilfred Beauty Academy in Newark.
She married John Costanzo on October 13, 1968, and celebrated their 50th golden wedding anniversary in 2018. They lived in Sayreville for 44 years, before relocating to Monroe Township. Carmela is survived by her husband, John Costanzo, and two children: John Costanzo Jr. of Westfield and Nicole Pyhel, along with her husband Brian Pyhel, of Millstone Township. She also is survived by her three grandchildren: Thomas Costanzo, Brett Pyhel, and Avery Pyhel.
A stay-at-home mom, Carmela's favorite hobby was gardening. She enjoyed planting flowers each spring and cultivating them. Carmela's flower gardens were admired and brought joy to family, friends, and neighbors each summer.
The funeral is from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave., Union, on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. A funeral mass is at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Newark, at 10:30 a.m. Entombment is in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visitation is on Wednesday from 2- 4 & 7-9 p.m.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to CurePSP, in support of advancing research toward a cure for rare brain diseases, in lieu of sending flowers.
