Carmella D'Alessio, 81, of Union, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025. Born and raised in Newark, Mel moved to Union in the early 1990's. She was a beloved figure and a dedicated member of her community, having served as a court clerk for Essex County in Newark for over 30 years, where her commitment and hard work earned her the respect and admiration of many.
Carmella was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newark (Madanna Della Fontana), a place that held a special significance in her life. Her faith intertwined with her daily activities, and she found joy and solace within her church community. Carmella's deep connection to her roots in Newark was evident in the way she embraced her surroundings, including her love for long walks around town, which allowed her to bask in the beauty and rhythms of her cherished neighborhood.
As a member of a large family, Mel was like a "mother" to her many relatives, providing love, support, and guidance whenever needed. She is preceded in death by her father, Carmine D'Alessio; her mother, Catherine Policastro D'Alessio; and her siblings: Ida La Motta, Pasquale D'Alessio, Angelina Fiore, John "Jackson" D'Alessio, and Louise Jesse. Carmella’s longtime companion, James "Jimmy" Parrillo, also shared in her life’s journey.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and numerous friends, all of whom carry a piece of her spirit and vibrant personality with them. It is these connections that embody her legacy and continue to reflect the love she shared throughout her life.
A Mass to honor Carmella D'Alessio will take place on February 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with the service beginning at 11:30 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the wonderful life she led, embracing the warmth and joy she brought to those fortunate enough to know her. Carmella's memory will remain alive in the hearts of many, as they recall the remarkable woman who gave so freely of her love and compassion.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made in her memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 259 Oliver Street, Newark, NJ 07105
