Dante Virgilio D’Sole, 95, of Springfield, NJ, peacefully passed away at home on October 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on March 7, 1929, in Newark, NJ, Dante was the son of Frank and Maria D’Sole (Giacobbe), who immigrated from Italy. He proudly served in the United States Army as a Sergeant from 1948 to 1952 at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. During his military service, Dante not only excelled as a draftsman—creating postal-board writing, silkscreen printing, and various commercial artworks—but also showcased his athletic talents on the football, baseball, basketball, and boxing teams.
On September 22, 1956, Dante married his beloved wife, Catherine D’Sole (Moran), at St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Irvington, NJ. Together, they raised three children—Patricia, Michael, and Suzanne—while living in Newark, Irvington, and Springfield, NJ.
Dante held the position of Operations Manager in the Shipping & Receiving Department at MPO Videotronics in New York City, where he also worked as a technician, repairing machines that expedited film and video for clients. He then dedicated 10 years to the Springfield Department of Public Works as a laborer before retiring at the age of 70. During the summer months, he worked as a lifeguard and activities instructor for organizations including the YMCA in Orange, NJ, the SSC Club in Newark, NJ, the Red Cross, and Camp Dennis in Stillwater, NJ.
His true passion lay in coaching football. As the Head Coach and President of the Vailsburg QP’s Pop Warner Football teams, he led his squad to an outstanding and undefeated season, earning the Pop Warner Junior League Football Championship Award from the New York Jets in 1968. He also served as the Offense and Defense Coordinator for the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Irvington, NJ.
Dante’s love for sports extended beyond football; he enjoyed baseball, boxing, and bowling, as well as painting and drawing. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family, never missing one of his granddaughters' softball games or dance recitals. Dante and Catherine looked forward to their annual trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, where they relished playing cards and listening to jazz music.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Catherine D’Sole (Moran); daughter Patricia Nardone (D’Sole) and son-in-law Derek Nardone; daughter Suzanne D’Sole-Boettcher and son-in-law Robert Boettcher; daughter-in-law Annmarie DeStefano-D’Sole; and granddaughters Alexa McCaffrey and husband Brett Hardman, and Jaclyn Nardone. He was predeceased by his son, Michael Dante D’Sole, as well as his eight siblings and parents.
