David George Garrabrants
David George Garrabrants of Union died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 87 after a brief illness. Dave was preceded in death by his loving parents, Andrew Morgan and Celine Adele (nee Boyette) Garrabrants. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Barbara Jean Garrabrants (nee Morris). Loving father to Beth Jean Canning and her husband, Robert, and Andrew Charles Garrabrants and his wife, Lucy Zemp.
David grew up Union and was a 1945 graduate of Union High School where he was in charge of shepherding Willie Butt, the school’s (live) goat mascot to football games. He attended college at both Seton Hall and Antioch College (Ohio) and obtained his Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering in 1956. He was a WWII Navy veteran.
A faithful member of Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church in Union for more than 50 years, Dave served the Lord and the church in a variety of ways, most recently as a veteran choir member and volunteer for the monthly food pantry. Along with his wife, Barbara, he was a past advisor to the church's senior high youth group for more than two decades. Many of those teens have fond memories of weekend retreats, movie nights/lock-ins and volleyball marathons with “Mr. and Mrs. G.” In September 2013, Dave was honored by the congregation for 30 years of service as clerk of Session. Dave's quick wit and gentle demeanor will be missed by all who knew him.
