George L Lombardi
George L Lombardi age 102, of Gillette, Long Hill Township, died on Wednesday Dec. 31, 2014. Born in Newark on Sept. 23, 1912, one of 11 children, he lived there until moving to Union in 1936, where he resided for 70 years, before moving to Gillette.
The funeral service will be in the Galante Funeral Home 2800 Morris Ave. in Union on Tuesday January 6, 2015 at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Hollywood Memorial Park also in Union. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 - 11;30 am.
Mr. Lombardi was predeceased by Margaret his loving wife of 72 years, who died on September 7, 2008. He is survived by his sons Pasquale G. Lombardi and his wife Barbara, and George L. Lombardi Jr.; also grandchildren Arlene, Pasquale J. and his wife Paula, Michelle and Lani Lombardi, and great grandchildren Luke George Lombardi; & Isabella and Carly Zurla.
Mr. Lombardi graduated from West Side High School in Newark in 1929, and immediately was employed as office boy, and later as law clerk, and after that as attorney with the then prestigious law firm of Harrison & Roche, in Newark.
While employed he was permitted to continue his education at Dana College in Newark, and then Mercer Beasley School of Law (also Rutgers U.), until graduation in 1934 with honors, and with L.L.B.
Later in 1934, he passed the State examination and became a lawyer. After the then prerequisite of three years of law practice, in 1937 he took and passed a special State examination and became Counselor at Law and Master in Chancery. Later, he was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The law firm Harrison & Roche was dissolved in 1943 upon the death of it's senior partner, and thereafter Mr. Lombardi engaged in private practice in Newark until 1960, then in Union.
Mr. Lombardi was a member of many legal, civic, and political associations. In Union he served as President of the Planning Board, and then as attorney for the Union Township Zoning Board of Adjustment. In 1965 he was appointed Judge of the Union Township Municipal Court. he retired in 1981, as he approached the mandatory retirement age of 70.
