John Joseph "Jack" Satz
Beloved father, grandfather, uncle and WWII Vet
John Joseph “Jack” Satz died peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2014, at the age of 95. A memorial mass will be held for Jack at St. Aloysius Church on Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11 AM, followed by a memorial gathering at his home. The family welcomes all relatives, friends and neighbors. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Galante Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Ave. Caldwell.
Jack was born and raised in Newark. He was awarded an academic scholarship to St. Peter’s Prep after winning the Bishop’s Diocese-wide essay contest and graduated in 1937.
He was a Tech Sergeant in the Army Air Corp during WWII, serving 30 months overseas, mostly in New Guinea and the Philippines.
Jack married his “Irish rose” Virginia Satz (nee Byrne) in April of 1943 while on a 3-day pass from his service duties and they later settled and lived in West Caldwell for over 60 years. He worked for 36 years as a Purchasing Agent for C.G. Winans until his retirement in 1987.
Jack loved visits from his children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces and had a life-long passion for baseball and later, volleyball, which he played until he was 81. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, doing crossword puzzles, and watching “Jeopardy” while eating his nightly Klondike bar. Jack nearly drowned as a child, but overcame his fear of the water at age fifty and learned how to swim.
Jack was preceded in death by parents, John and Anna, his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia, and his brother, William.
He was the loving father of Kathleen McDermott of Bernardsville, NJ and Kenneth Satz of Morris Plains, the cherished grandfather of Kevin Satz of San Diego, CA, and Rebecca and Victoria Satz of Morris Plains, NJ. He will also be sadly missed by his daughter-in-law Roberta Satz, son-in-law Michael McDermott, nieces Nancy Hampson and Marilyn Langan, nephews Richard Kochel, Peter Kochel, and Ronald Kochel, many dear Byrne family and Satz family members, and his devoted caregiver, Daniel Abiram.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the West Essex First Aid Squad, whose help the family greatly appreciated.
