John Kostis

John Kostis, 90, of Union, passed away on Thursday July 21, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.

The funeral will be from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Avenue, Union, on Monday at 9:30 am. The funeral service will be at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Union at 11 am. Interment to follow at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 to 8 pm.

Born in Cos, Greece, John came to the United States in 1958, then lived in Jersey City, and Union, NJ for the past 40 years.

John served in the Greek armed forces and was a centurion for Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion. He was a very benevolent, caring man who loved justice and brought two families here to America. John worked as a policeman in Greece and at Western Electric in Kearny for 4 years. He also was a restaurant manager for Betty-Lind Diner in Elizabeth for many years.

John was the beloved husband of Mary (nee Halkias) for 59 years and is the loving father of William Vrettos and his wife Diana. He is a proud papou of John Vrettos and his wife Kelly, and Mary Anna Domenic and her husband Chris; Great grandfather of Peter, Anna, Jack, Christina and Constantine. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Maria (nee Katras) Kostis and his siblings Davis,Michael,Demetrios Kostis, Dionysia Prousou, Zaharo Troumouhis, and Evvlalia Hatzikalimniou.
