Born in Newark he lived is South Orange & Mendham before moving to Florham Park. Joseph was the owner of the LaFera Construction Co. Newark for many years. Also he was a member of the Brooklake Country Club Florham Park.

Husband of the late Rose (Nee Grande). Father of Bruce LaFera, Lisa Cioppettini & the late Joseph LaFera III. Brother of Mariann Grasso. Grandfather of Bruce LaFera, Tiffany LaFerra, Adrienne Larsen, & Alexis Cioppettini. Great grandfather of  Justin Larsen, Alyssa Larsen & Marquse Braxton.
