An angel entered the world on May 25, 1947, in Nise, Anambra State, Nigeria, born to Ukpaka and Deborah Okafor. Her name was Joy Nwanyanwu Onugha, and she truly embodied her name. Joy's beautiful spirit peacefully left us on January 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of her cherished children: Tobechukwu Clouden, Chinyelu Boateng, Chukwuemeka Onugha and Arinzechukwu Onugha.
A remarkable pharmacist, Joy was a vibrant member of the Igbo community and a devoted philanthropist. She earned her degree from Long Island University and proudly held membership in the National Board of Pharmacists. As a nurturing mother, devoted wife and loving grandmother, she embraced every moment to envelop her family in warmth and affection. Joy inspired all who crossed her path, her genuine spirit casting a luminous glow upon the world around her.
Her legacy endures in the hearts of those who knew her, with her contributions to the community forever cherished. Faith was the cornerstone of Joy's life, guiding her choices and actions. She actively participated in various organizations, including the Ifeatu Ifediche Women’s Group, the Anambra Enugu Association, and the Oba Union, where, in each case, she engaged in countless charitable endeavors and supported her community. Her unwavering faith imbued her with strength, inspiring those fortunate enough to be in her loving presence.
In her leisure, Joy delighted in the company of her grandchildren, whom she frequently watched and cared for and lovingly gave special names to. Joy also cherished her daily visits to the gym, where she loved to swim and spend time in the sauna. She believed in nurturing both mind and body as essential for the soul, often sharing her wellness journey with friends and family.
Joy is survived by her husband, George Onugha; her four adoring children, Tobechukwu Clouden and her husband Sean, Chinyelu Boateng and her husband Eric, Chukwuemeka Onugha and his wife Jafrania, and Arinzechukwu Onugha and his wife LaTasha; and her eleven cherished grandchildren, Agyeman Boateng, Izuchukwu Boateng, Ezeudo Clouden, Emenike Clouden, Chukwuemeka II Onugha, Mensah Boateng, Soludo Onugha, Amalachukwu Onugha, Ikemba Onugha, Ziora Onugha and Ekene Onugha. She also leaves behind her two sisters, Eunice Amarabe and Phoebe Adakah, along with numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Joy is preceded in death by her devoted parents, Ukpaka and Deborah Okafor, and her siblings, Godwin Okafor (brother), Anene Okafor (brother), Mabel Okoye (sister), Virginia Nnite (sister), Edna Ifeagwu (sister), Samuel Okafor (brother), and Emmanuel Okafor (brother).
As we gather to celebrate Joy's extraordinary life, we remember her not only for her countless achievements but also for the boundless love she bestowed upon every space she graced.
