It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kostis (Gus) J. Mikros, a beloved brother,
husband, father, grandfather, and successful business owner, who passed away on Monday, March 13,
2023, at the age of 94. Kostis is survived by his devoted wife, Irene; their daughter, Sophia; two
granddaughters, Sophia and Erini; and siblings Eva, Eftihia, Dimitris, and Alekos. Kostis’ son, John(Yango), his brothers Vassos (George) and Minas, and his sister Zoe preceded him in death.
Kostis was born on the beautiful island of Karpathos, Greece, on April 18, 1928, the oldest of eight
siblings. He always took the time to mentor and take care of his brothers and sisters, Eva, Zoe, Eftihia,
Vassos (George), Minas, Alekos, and Dimitris. At a young age, he learned the value of hard work and
determination, which would serve him well throughout his life. He finished university in Greece and
traveled to the island of Rhodes, where he worked as an accountant for many years, before immigrating
to the United States to seek a better life for himself and his family.
Kostis’ entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own business, owning several diners in New Jersey,
including the Mark Twain and the Huck Finn Diners in Union and The Cedars Restaurant in Elizabeth. He
was known for his warm hospitality, treating everyone who came through his doors like family. Kostis’
kindness and generosity were felt by all who knew him. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to
anyone in need, often going out of his way to ensure that others were cared for.
Kostis was a devoted family man, always putting his loved ones first. He adored his wife Irene and
cherished every moment they spent together. His children, Yango and Sophia, were the light of his life,
and he was immensely proud of all their accomplishments. Kostis’ two granddaughters, Sophia and Erini,
brought him immense joy. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories, and imparting
wisdom.
Kostis will be deeply missed by his family, friends, customers, and all who knew him. His legacy will live on
through his loved ones and the countless lives he touched. His kindness, generosity, and warm smile will
forever be remembered.
Rest in peace, Kostis.
