Mary Catherine Newman
Mary Newman, who lived her life to the fullest passed away surrounded by her family on July 15, 2022, after a long battle with Frontal Temporal Dementia. She was 83 years old.
Born Mary Catherine McMorrow on March 27, 1939, to proud Irish parents John and Nora McMorrow, Mary was a dual citizen of Ireland and the United States and was passionate about her Irish heritage. She grew up in Manhattan and attended Fordham University. She went on to travel the world working for TWA, where she spent many years before meeting her husband Denis at The Bluffs in Bay Head, NJ. They were married in 1966 at St. Mary’s Church in Greenwich, CT and later raised three children in Short Hills, NJ.
Mary’s dedication and life focus were her family and her Catholic faith. She and Denis were active parishioners at St. Rose of Lima, where Mary taught CCD for 30 years. Mary loved celebrations and treasured visits with family and friends. She spent much of her time later in life traveling between Short Hills, Harbour Island Bahamas, and Caragh Lake in County Kerry Ireland where she and her husband had homes. She had a passion for music, dancing, painting, and a good dinner party.
She particularly enjoyed her annual Derby Day party in Short Hills, New Year’s Eve in Harbour Island, and sing-alongs at Nick’s in Ireland. Mary studied art in the United States, France and Ireland, and enjoyed traveling the world with her easel.
Mary’s life was a reflection of her love of family. She is survived by Denis, her husband of 55 years, by her three children and their spouses: Stephen (Meg) of Far Hills, NJ, Brian (Lynne) of Bedford, NY and Kerry (Paul) of Wellesley, MA, and by ten grandchildren: Kendall, Conor, Shay, Finley, Samantha, Liam, Colin, Henry, Ryan and Katherine.
