Psychotherapist and beloved husband, father, and brother, Michael J. Fensom, 74, died on July 17, 2024. Michael devoted his life to the betterment of his community’s mental health. He practiced psychotherapy privately in Little Falls, NJ, for nearly forty years, counseling hundreds of patients. In the 1990s, Michael established monthly group therapy sessions in Bergen and Passaic Counties that were free and open to the public. He led these sessions, which focused on supporting the family members of people living with mental health issues, for more than three decades.
A longtime resident of West Caldwell, NJ, Michael was also known for offering a kind, inspiring or supportive word to friends and neighbors in the aisles of local food stores, on sidewalks, and elsewhere about town. Affectionately known by many as “Dr. Mike,” his sense of humor, street smarts, love of music, and unfailing belief in the strength of the human spirit guided the relationships he had with his patients, friends, family members, and anyone who needed help.
Michael was born in Newark, NJ, in 1949, to Harry C. Fensom, Sr. and Theresa Fensom (née Rith), and grew up in Irvington, NJ. He attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School before earning his masters degree in social work through Fordham University. Michael worked as a Senior Case Manager at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Passaic, NJ, for fifteen years before establishing his private practice. A determined advocate for his patients, Michael’s practice remained open until shortly before his passing. Throughout his career, he was the recipient of numerous professional awards through the state of New Jersey and various mental health associations.
Michael is survived by his wife, Kathryn Fensom (née Dotti), his son, Michael Fensom and his partner Alexandra Persaud, his daughter, Sarah Fensom and her partner Chris Shields, and his brother Harry C. Fensom, Jr. and his wife, Gail Fensom.
A celebration of life will be held at the Vine Room in Caldwell, NJ, on August 25 at 2 p.m.
