Michael George Szabo
Michael George Szabo 93 of Union died on Tuesday February 24, 2015 while in hospice care @ Father Hudson House in Elizabeth.
The funeral will be from the Galante Funeral Home 2800 Morris Ave. Union, on Saturday at 9am. The funeral mass will be in St. Michael Church in Union at 10:15 am. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8 pm.
Born in Kentucky he lived in Newark and Irvington, before moving to Union 30 years ago. He was an inspector for Otis Elevator Co. in Harrison for 25 years, working several other jobs until retiring 5 years ago. A veteran of The US Navy serving during WWII, he was also the former Bat Boy for the 1937 Newark Bears International League Baseball Championship Team. He was also a member of the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame, and a coach for the Irvington Little League for 30 years. Also he was a member of the Irvington Optimist Club, the Union Elks Lodge # 1583, the Bayway Polish Club of Elizabeth; where he met his girlfriend Mary Ihne, The Cryan Civic Association, and was a Democratic District Leader in Union and a member of the Regular Democratic Club of Union.
Michael was the father of Michele Loihle, Riza Baron and her husband David, and Michael Szabo and his wife Patricia. He was also the brother of Agnes (Honey) Reed and her husband Chuck, as well as the Grandfather of David and Eric Baron, Francisca Menendez, Christine (Loihle) Dunning , Matthew, Ryan, and Megan Szabo, and the great grandfather of Olivia, Emily, Elexa, and the late Eric James Baron.
