Richard D. Van Volkom, 77 of Farmingdale, NJ passed away on February 20, 2019.
Funeral is from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Tuesday at 8:30 AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 60 Byrd Ave. Bloomfield at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Visitation is on Monday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
Born in Kearny, Richard lived in Belleville, and then in Little Falls for 26 years. In 1996, he and his wife built a beautiful home in Farmingdale, where they have resided since. Richard loved living in Farmingdale, enjoyed the resort style atmosphere, and appreciated relaxing on his deck overlooking the golf course, taking in the beautiful view with his family.
Richard had a successful career as a purchasing agent, and later as a salesman. During his retirement, Richard enjoyed working with his wife through their various business ventures.
An aficionado of all things classic cars, Richard cherished the time spent driving cars, especially long rides with his daughter, talking about life; and had many happy times washing cars with his son years ago. He also liked watching golf and baseball, and always stayed current in finances. Richard and his wife loved going out to enjoy a fine dinner, but were always happy to host holidays at their house, and created many great memories for their family this way. Richard always knew that those nights spent at home, he and the family were treated to his wife's famous chicken and rice, or another of her delicious meals.
Richard was the beloved husband of 53 years to Carolyn Van Volkom (nee Lubertazza); loving father of Derek Van Volkom and his wife Alissa, and Michele Van Volkom and her husband Joseph Cronin; and dear grandfather of Matthew Van Volkom.
Richard will always be remembered for his quick wit, and his ability to make friends wherever he went. Truly a life well lived, he will be deeply missed.
