Sassuphie A Mellon, 81 of Union NJ passed away on August 7, 2024. Relatives and
friends are invited to attend a viewing on Monday August 12, 2024 at: Our Lady of the
Most Holy Rosary and St Michael’s Catholic Church: 52 Smith St. Elizabeth NJ 07201
from 9:00 AM to 10 :00 AM followed by a mass 10-11 AM. She will be laid to rest at her
final resting place in Hollywood Memorial Park 1500 Stuyvesant Ave Union NJ 07083.
Sassuphie Mellon (neé Antoine) was born in Desdunnes Haiti on July 6, 1943, to
parents Desir Antoine and Laurette Lamitié (both deceased). She was the youngest of
10 siblings. As a child, her humble journey began when her Godmother Olympe took
her to live in Gonaīves for her studies; there she spent her formative years.
She moved to Port-au-Prince where she continued her studies focusing on culinary arts
and secretarial studies while living with her older cousin Anita also known as “Madan
Ma” (deceased). There she would meet Augustin Mellon, her future husband and best
friend. She was blessed with three daughters, Nyrlande, Majorie, Daphney(deceased)
and served as bonus mom to Marie Carmelle (deceased), Mireille and Yolette. She was
grandmother to 7 amazing grandchildren who all loved her in their own unique ways.
Her closest friends called her Kiki or Sophie and was affectionally known as “MaTante”
to all her nieces and nephews or anyone who encountered her. Her home was an oasis
in the Capital for all nieces and nephews who wanted to further their studies providing
them with room and board. She and her husband served as mentors to many who
passed through their home ensuring they left with various life skills.
Alongside her husband, MaTante successfully managed a wholesale store selling
products in bulk. She would boast, that “math is the same in every language,” so she
prided herself in handling the accounting in their thriving business. Apart from the store,
Sassuphie traveled to different islands where she would purchase goods and resale
them back in Haiti.
Sassuphie and Augustin were married for nearly 50 years. They were inseparable,
always traveling together until their last day together when he passed in November of
2020. They were opposite in personalities but brought out the best in one another. Their
love for each other is an amazing example of soulmates. In these times of sorrow, we
draw strength from the incredible love they shared for 50 years. Theirs was a love that
endured, a bond unbreakable. We find solace knowing they are reunited, and their love
story lives on through us.
Sassuphie was an outstanding hostess and an excellent cook. She took pleasure to
feed and serve her family, friends, and all who interacted with her. Her recipes would
not only fill your body but also your soul. She made the best “Lalo” by far. She would
curate her Lalo to her children’s and grandchildren’s specific dietary requirements. In
her later years, her culinary passion transferred into an amazing side business making
“Cremas” that was well known and began to sell under her own label “Cremas de Chez nous”.
Sassuphie was a strong matriarch always instilling in her children, grandchildren, nieces
and nephews the importance of education and strived to make sure the future generation always made it further than she did.
Over the years, we’ve heard many stories from the friends, relatives, neighbors, and
even strangers to whom MaTante provided help and support in their times of need.
Sassuphie taught us many things throughout our lives that we hold on to today, good
manners, respect for others and sound moral values. These values have made us who we are.
MaTante, we thank you for your unconditional love, your sacrifices and your care for us.
We are who we are because of you. And while we’ll miss your physical presence every
day, we know your love will surround us always. Your legacy of love and generosity will live through us.
Mrs. Sassuphie Mellon is survived by Nyrlande Mellon Vallès and Jean Solon Vallès;
Majorie Mellon Johnstone and Dion Johnstone; amazing grandchildren Ralph,
Johnathan, Victoria, Dimitri, Fabrice, Rachelle, and Stephanie and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lastly we want to acknowledge the outstanding sacrifices made by grandchildren
Victoria and Dimitri in putting their lives on hold for the past two years in helping care for their grandma.
Thank you all for the words of encouragement and traveling from near and far to support us.
