Sophie Stappas

Sophie Stappas, 74 of Mountainside passed away at home on June 15, 2019.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Sophie at the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Wednesday from 4-8 PM, with a Trisagion Service being held at 6 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 250 Gallows Hill Road Westfield on Thursday at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Born in Athens, Greece, Sophie moved with her family to Newark, NJ when she was seven years old. Later, she lived in Plainfield, and then Westfield where she raised her family. She was a longtime resident there until moving to Mountainside in 1999. Sophie worked as a receptionist at Canoe Brook Country Club in Short Hills for several years. She was a longtime, active member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield. She was an avid gardener and a talented chef and baker.  But, her greatest joy was being a loving mother and grandmother.

Sophie was the dear mother of Christopher Stappas and his wife Tami, William Stappas and Michael Stappas; beloved grandmother of Lexi Grace Stappas and Brielle Hope Stappas. She is also survived by her sister Mary Romas.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made payable to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, care of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 250 Gallows Hill Road Westfield, NJ, 07091.
